Saraswati Day - Preparing From Now

Saraswati Day – Preparing From Now

Although Saraswati Day is still many weeks ahead, at 23 April 2011 for exact date, the elderly Balinese who understand Balinese traditional calendar had already think about the preparation for that important day from now on. They at least have to think about the preparation for the banten (offering) which is too sophisticated for outsiders, as well as preparing a committee at banjar (custom village) to manage preliminary stages prior to the celebration.

Tourism stakeholders too had already had this celebration in mind. A marketing staff at a hotel directory site commented: “This special day is a popular time with Hindus and Kuta and Bali see an increase in visitors compared to other parts of Indonesia where Islam is the core religion. Hotels are often much busier as a result so anyone planning on attending the celebrations should search online to book places.”

Saraswati Day is a celebration for the goddess Saraswati. The goddess is the sakti (wife) of the god Brahma and a patron for knowledge, widya (consciousness), music, the arts, wisdom, and sastra (literature). The goddess is often pictured as a very beautiful woman with four hands, in each of which the goddess holds genitri (prayer beads), Kropak (holy script), Wina (a musical instrument with two strings), and a lotus. The goddess is often accompanied by a swan.

On Saraswati Day, students all over the Bali land, from kindergarten to higher education level, pay homage to the goddess Saraswati. They go to their schools bringing their books and perform a prayer and ceremony there, where the Hindu priest sprinkles tirta (holy water). Any book that had been sprinkled with tirta is believed to be blessed. In their prayers, students usually beg to the goddess that they will be able to pass the exam and gathers more knowledge. For the rest of the day, Balinese usually do not read or write but take their time to contemplate on things that had been learnt.

Due to the discrepancy between the national secular calendar and the Balinese traditional calendar, people hold Saraswati Day two times each year. Actually, the celebration is held each 210 day at Saniscara Umanis Wuku Watugunung or Sinta. The celebration for 23 April 2011 is held at the Wuku Watugunung (the last of the calendar cycle). The next Saraswati Day will be held on 19 November 2011, at Sinta or the start of the new calendar cycle.
