Celebrating Chinese New Year in Bali!

Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. This year it falls on 3rd of February. It starts on the first day of the New Moon and ends with the beginning of the Full Moon.
Chinese people in Bali celebrate Chinese New Year in a traditional way. They clean their houses and temple (Kongco) and statues of their gods, decorate them with Chinese ornaments. Family gathers together on the New Year Eve, followed by dinner. Another feature of this occasion is showing respect to elders and god. Dishes are prepared for the New Year and in Bali egg skin dumplings which believe will bring luck and fortune is preferred.

For visitors who wish to celebrate Chinese New Year in Bali may have a family dinner at the villa with Chinese dishes. Most of all Balinese villas have spaces for a family gathering for special occasions. For those, who do not celebrate it; can still do shopping and eating at the restaurants as everything is open as usual. At some bars, restaurants and shops Chinese decorations can be found.

At the end of this event, usually, there is a lantern festive. This festive is even more attractive with a giant dragon’s performance which carried and played by young people. This dragon in Indonesia called “Barongsai”. Lantern and Barongsai are made from bamboo, silk and paper with red as a dominant colors.
